1972

Parrot Jungle, Money Jungle, Fort Lauderdale. After only 1 year in Miami, we were on the move again - this time to St Louis. On the way to our new home - we stopped in Disney World (which had opened the previous year - 1 Oct 1971).  This photo of us in front of Cinderella castle reminds me of the Partridge Family.

1970

When I was in 2nd Grade, I found out some info regarding Santa and got in trouble when I got home from school and was shouting the fact in the house to my mom who was worried my younger sisters would hear - I thought I was the only one who knew the "secret" and should share it!

My First Communion (my brother were altar servers)

This was the year I put my left hand through a glass door (was spending the night at a friend's house) - my mom had to come and get me - I think our next door neighbor, a doctor, put a butterfly bandage on the wound (I still have a faint scar).

1968

My sister, Julie was born in May 1968 - 5 days before my birthday.  When my mom was in the hospital with her, Amy and I did a great job cutting each other's hair on the deck of our house on Crittenden Drive.  It took months to grow out - as you can see by my kindergarten photo (started in September 1968).

We moved into this awesome house in February 1968 - there was a creek that ran under the house (not so great when there was a heavy rain and the basement would flood).

We had a large back yard - my brothers built a tree house - which from memory was about 3 stories - they even slept out there a few times.

1967

I have very fond memories of my visits to my Grandma Peurrung's apartment. Helen Catherine Peurrung (nee Fobiano) was born on 16 July 1899.  She was a buyer for Lawton's, a fashionable women's retail store in Downtown Cincinnati before she was married. Over the years I remember she would give each of us a roll of quarters she saved up and we played not with toys, but wooden coasters, tin popcorn containers, wooden figures, a metal dog that had holes which was once used to hold cigarettes.  We counted cars that went by the front of her building - each taking a colour.

She loved to shop and take us to Graeter's in Hyde Park Square which was a short 10 minute walk from her apartment on Linwood Ave - passing buckeye trees along the way. Graeter's is well known then and now for it's wonderful ice cream & baked goods.  Amy and I especially loved their butter ring cookies!  Looking on a map - my grandmother's apartment was in Mt Lookout and wasn't far from Krohn Conservatory and Ault Park.

1966

I remember sharing a room with my sister, Amy in an apartment complex (we lived in a large 3 bedroom townhouse). So many kids to play with.

Polly Flinders smocked dresses

Playing with blocks and dolls

I remember getting a shock from an electric socket...having a soft chenille blanket that was a pale yellow (I think) - I loved the little raised flowers that were it.  One time I spilled juice on the blanket and was worried I would get in trouble - so I put it in the dryer thinking that is how it would get clean!
